Why should you join a Virginia Beach hiking group?

Learn New Skills

Joining a local hiking group will provide you with many benefits on top of being able to meet other like-minded hikers. The first benefit is you will be able to learn new outdoor skills from these groups. Some groups offer organized workshops to teach their members about hiking, nutrition, camping, backpacking, and more. This is a great way to gain exposure to new skills and get direct help from members. You can also share tips with other members and get a variety of different perspectives to find what works for you.

New Challenges

The next benefit you will get from a Virginia Beach hiking club is that you will be presented with many new exciting challenges. Whether it be building your hiking stamina, working on pacing, backpacking the first time, or tackling a tough mountain, you will be able to get support from a group and face those new challenges. This is a great way to build your skills and gain valuable experience with the support of the hiking group.

No Research Required

The third benefit and one of my favorite benefits are that no research is required for the hikes. The group organizers will be the ones to research the hike information from the trailhead, distance, elevation, and difficulty, and more. If you are used to doing all of the research, now you can finally take a break. The only thing you need to do is look at the hiking events and pick the ones that sound the most interesting and just show up!

3 things to consider when joining a Virginia Beach hiking group

Hiking Area

You might be very excited and want to join your first hiking group right now, but there are some things you should consider before you go. The first thing you should look into is the hiking areas that the group plans their hikes for. Some groups plan hikes locally and some groups only do hikes out-of-town. You can look at the group’s past events to see where they typically hike so you can pick a group

Required Experience

The next thing you want to look into is the expected experience level from the group. Some groups welcome all skill levels, some cater to beginners, and some focus on hikes for more advanced hikers. Find a group that matches your current skill level or is slightly above it so you can work on building new skills and experiences. if you have ever hiked with a group and felt like you were going too slow or you had to keep slowing down, you know how important it is to match the group’s experience.

Average Attendance

The third and one of the most important things to consider for some is the average attendance size of the events. While some groups may have a large membership number, the number can actually be deceiving. Some groups have been around for longer than a decade and have accumulated members over the years, however over time many members become inactive. You can look at the most recent events for the group to get a feel for how many people actually show up to the events.
